Gatunek znany głównie ze środkowej części Europy, notowany ponadto z Francji, południowego Tyrolu, Słowenii i Siedmiogrodu. Wszędzie sporadycznie, przeważnie pojedynczo spotykany, tylko niekiedy w miejscu rozrodu poławiany w większej liczbie osobników. W Polsce znany dotąd tylko z Gdańska, Niziny Mazowieckiej i okolic Przemyśla, natomiast nie udało się natrafić w piśmiennictwie na dokładniejsze dane do występowania na Śląsku i w «guberni piotrkowskiej», ostatnio stwierdzony również w Puszczy Białowieskiej. Rozwija się w wilgotnym, miękkim, czerwonobrunatno butwiejącym drewnie drzew liściastych, zwłaszcza wierzb i olch.
