Taxon description
Gatunek występujący w Afryce Północnej i w niemal całej Europie (prócz skrajnych obszarów północnych), na wschód sięgając po Jarosławl (ZSRR), Kaukaz, Syrię i obszar wokół Morza Kaspijskiego. W Europie środkowej rzadko i sporadycznie spotykany. W Polsce znany z nielicznych stanowisk w dziewięciu krainach. Zamieszkuje tereny nizinne i niższe położenia górskie. Larwy żerują w martwym, przegrzybiałym drewnie drzew liściastych. Przepoczwarczenie następuje późnym latem lub jesienią. Postacie dojrzałe opuszczają komory poczwarkowe, kryją się pod odstającą korą, w szczeliny i w próchnicę w dziuplach drzew, gdzie odbywają diapauzę zimową. Na swobodzie ukazują się w maju i zwykle są poławiane, zwłaszcza wieczorem, na krzewach i suchych gałęziach.
