Taxon description
Gatunek palearktyczny, rozprzestrzeniony w Europie od Danii i południowych prowincji Fennoskandii aż do południowej Francji, północnych Włoch, Jugosławii, Bułgarii i Rumunii, a na wschód do Uralu i dalej w Azji przez Syberię docierający do Oceanu Spokojnego i Japonii. W Polsce spotykany na ogół rzadko i sporadycznie, notowany z nielicznych stanowisk w różnych częściach kraju. Cykl rozwojowy przebiega w ciągu dwu lat. Rójka chrząszczy rozpoczyna się w drugiej połowie maja i kończy w sierpniu. Imagines po opuszczeniu komór poczwarkowych żywią się tkankami liści i kory na cienkich pędach drzew liściastych. Samice składają jaja na pniach osłabionych, obumierających lub od niedawna uschniętych drzew, również na nie okorowanych drzewach powalonych, złomach, wiatrowałach i drewnie sągowym. Opadane są tylko drzewa liściaste, jak np. buk — Fagus L., topole — Populus L., brzozy — Betula L., dęby — Quercus L., wierzby — Salix L., lipy — Tilia L., orzech — Juglans L., morwy — Morus L., leszczyna — Corylus avellana L. i czereśnia — Cerasus avium (L.) Moench. Larwy żerują pod korą, drążąc chodniki słabo naruszające biel. Po drugim zimowaniu starsze larwy wdrążają się w drewno, gdzie robią komorę poczwarkową; niekiedy komora jest sporządzona pod korą. Przepoczwarczenie następuje w maju-czerwcu.
