Taxon description
Gatunek zamieszkujący głównie Europę środkową oraz sąsiadujące z nią obszary, na północ docierający do Danii oraz południowych prowincji Szwecji i Finlandii. W Polsce, choć nie znany jeszcze z niektórych krain, występuje prawdopodobnie na całym obszarze prócz wyższych partii górskich. Zasiedla tereny nizinne i niższe położenia górskie. Cykl rozwojowy co najmniej dwuletni. Larwy odbywają rozwój w przegrzybiałym, miękkim drewnie oraz w dziuplach drzew liściastych, gdzie żerują w murszu i wśród nagromadzonych ekskrementów larw chrząszczy drewno- i próchnożernych. W zależności od warunków siedliskowych przepoczwarczenie następuje w czerwcu lub lipcu. Postacie dojrzałe w ciągu dnia prowadzą skryty sposób życia pod odstającą korą i w dziuplach, ukazują się o zmroku i niekiedy w nocy przylatują do źródeł sztucznego światła.
