Gatunek środkowoeuropejski, na zachód docierający do Francji, a na południe do Krainy, Hercegowiny i Siedmiogrodu, notowany nadto z Danii i Szwecji południowej. W Polsce znany z nielicznych rozproszonych stanowisk w różnych częściach kraju. Żyje w dziuplach drzew liściastych, zwłaszcza buków, dębów, klonów, topoli i wiązów. Larwy żerują w spróchniałym, przegrzybiałym drewnie, w dziuplach, wśród miałkich ekskrementów i suchych trocin powstałych z żeru larw innych chrząszczy drewnożernych oraz w ich opuszczonych chodnikach. Postacie dojrzałe ukazują się w czerwcu i lipcu. W ciągu dnia nie opuszczają dziupli. Nigdy nie są poławiane na kwiatach, to też na ogół są bardzo rzadko łowione, stosunkowo łatwo je uzyskać drogą hodowli larw.
