Taxon description
Gatunek prawie kosmopolityczny, zasiedlający jednak na stałe kraje o cieplejszym klimacie —w Europie spotykany sporadycznie w rejonie Morza Śródziemnego, niekiedy zawlekany na północ do niektórych większych miast (Glasgow, Hamburg, Berlin), lecz tam nie aklimatyzuje się. W Polsce stwierdzono fakt zawleczenia (Warszawa, 1955 r.) w tkaninach wełnianych z Izraela. Na swobodzie może się rozwijać jedynie w krajach tropikalnych, gdyż dla swego rozwoju wymaga temperatury 25°-35°C oraz rytmicznego jej podwyższania do 40°C, a nawet 45°C — już przy obniżeniu temperatury do 20°C występuje duża śmiertelność poczwarek. Postacie dojrzałe odżywiają się pyłkiem i nektarem kwiatów, natomiast larwy żerują na suchych materiałach i produktach pochodzenia zwierzęcego, zawierających keratynę. Larwy były notowane jako poważne szkodniki niszczące wełnę, wyroby wełniane, skórę, futra, włosy, róg i pierze.
