Taxon description
Gatunek rozmieszczony w Europie południowej i środkowej (zwłaszcza w jej części zachodniej); notowany ponadto z Kaukazu, obszaru wokół Morza Śródziemnego oraz z zachodniej części Afryki Północnej. Wiele dawnych danych o występowaniu we wschodniej części Europy należy odnieść do A. elongatus A. et J. B. Villa, uważanego przez długi czas za rasę lub odmianę omawianego gatunku. W Polsce jest to chrząszcz prawie nie znany, notowany tylko z dwu krain na podstawie znalezisk sprzed przeszło stu lat. W zbiorach G. Polentza i R. Scholza (Muzeum Przyrodnicze Uniwersytetu Wrocławskiego) jest kilka okazów ze Śląska, a u F. Fejfera (Instytut Zoologii PAN w Warszawie) jeden okaz z okolic Zamościa. Występuje na miejscach wilgotnych — na skarpach rowów i pobrzeżach stawów i bagnisk. Jako rośliny żywicielskie są podawane zazwyczaj: sit członowaty — Juncus articulatus L., sit tępokwiatowy — J. subnodulosus Schrank oraz ponikło błotne — Heleocharis palustris (L.) R. et Sch. Larwy żerują pod oskórkiem łodygi w drążonych przez siebie spiralnych, a potem prosto biegnących chodnikach, na końcu których budują komorę poczwarkową. Postacie dojrzałe ukazują się w lipcu i przezimowują w glebie przy podstawie roślin, pod kamieniami i w ściółce; niekiedy bywają poławiane w napływkach popowodziowych. Wiosną pojawiają się w kwietniu na roślinach. Samice składają jaja na powierzchni łodygi situ, pokrywając je wydzieliną w postaci skórzastej czapeczki.
