Taxon description
Gatunek rozsiedlony od Wysp Brytyjskich, Danii i południowych prowincji Szwecji aż do Europy południowej i Afryki Północnej, notowany także z Zakaukazia i Syrii; w obszarze swego rozmieszczenia w miarę posuwania się z południa na północ i z zachodu na wschód coraz rzadziej spotykany. W Polsce szeroko rozprzestrzeniony od Bałtyku aż po Tatry, lecz rzadko i sporadycznie znajdowany. Występuje na ciepłych, odkrytych stanowiskach w ekskrementach krów i koni, w pryzmach kompostowych i wśród rozkładających się szczątków roślinnych. Postacie dorosłe po przezimowaniu ukazują się wczesną wiosną, larwy w maju, a nowe pokolenie późnym latem. Obserwowano osobniki fruwające.
