Pospolity, szeroko rozmieszczony gatunek palearktyczny, na wschód sięgający do Japonii; w Europie na północ docierający do koła podbiegunowego, a na południu występujący głównie na terenach górzystych w strefie subalpejskiej i alpejskiej. W Polsce, choć nie znany jeszcze ze wszystkich krain, występuje prawdopodobnie na całym obszarze. Zasiedla gleby różnych typów; odżywia się ekskrementami krów, owiec i kóz, rzadziej dzikich zwierząt. Postacie dorosłe pojawiają się wczesną wiosną. Żerujące larwy spotyka się w odchodach w czerwcu, przepoczwarczenie następuje w glebie, a nowe pokolenie ukazuje się w lipcu.
