Gatunek rozmieszczony głównie w środkowej części Europy, sięgający na zachód po Francję, a na północ do skrajnych południowych prowincji Fennoskandii. W Polsce należy do rzadkości faunistycznych — notowano go tylko z czterech krain, w tym z okolic Krakowa przed przeszło 130 laty. Spotykany w ogrodach, widnych zaroślach, dolinach potoków i na miejscach wilgotnych na pobrzeżach lasu. Żyje na selerze zwyczajnym — Apium graveolens L., barszczu zwyczajnym — Heracleum sphondylium L. i barszczu syberyjskim — H. sybiricum L. Larwy żerują w korzeniach i szyi korzeniowej tych roślin. Drążą kręte chodniki długości 5-15 cm, a przeobrażają się w glebie. Postacie dojrzałe poławiano ponadto na trybule leśnej — Anthriscus silvestris (L.) Hoffm.
