Taxon description
Gatunek rozmieszczony od Mongolii przez Bliski Wschód i Europę do zachodniej części Afryki Północnej; w Europie sięga na północy do południowych obszarów Fennoskandii. W Polsce występuje prawdopodobnie na całym obszarze oprócz wyższych partii górskich, nie znany jest jednak jeszcze z kilku krain. Zasiedla pola, pastwiska, przydroża, gruzowiska, suche zbocza, nasłonecznione pobrzeża lasów i miejsca ruderalne. Żyje na licznych dzikich i hodowanych roślinach z rodziny krzyżowych. Najczęściej zbierany na czosnaczku pospolitym — Alliaria officinalis Andrz. i chrzanie pospolitym — Armoracia lapathifolia Gilib. (M. Wanat*). S. Smreczyński (1974) w kluczu do oznaczania chowaczów wymienia dla tego gatunku około 20 roślin żywicielskich, między innymi stulisza lekarskiego — Sisymbrium officinale (L.) Scop., gorczycę polną — Sinapis arvensis L., kapustę warzywną — Brassica oleracea L., rzodkiew zwyczajną — Raphanus raphanistrum L., dwurząd murowy — Diplotaxis muralis (L.) Dc. i tobołki polne — Thlaspi arvense L. Samice składają jaja na roślinach w maju-czerwcu. Larwy żerują w łodygach, ogonkach i żyłkach liści, powodując na nich wrzecionowate wyrosła. Przepoczwarczenie następuje w lipcu w komorze w glebie; ściany komory są wzmocnione wydzieliną larwy.
