Taxon description
Gatunek rozmieszczony w zachodniej i środkowej części Europy, docierający na północ w przybliżeniu do 64° szerokości geograficznej, na wschód do Syberii i Kaukazu, a na południe do północnych Włoch i górzystych obszarów Półwyspu Bałkańskiego. Ryjkowiec ten, o polskiej nazwie chowacz rzeżuchowiec, zamieszkuje tereny nizinne i górzyste, gdzie dociera do strefy subalpejskiej. Występuje na wilgotnych łąkach, błotach, bagnach, pobrzeżach wód, w wilgotnych lasach liściastych i zaroślach, nad źródłami i leśnymi strumieniami. Samica składa jaja w maju-czerwcu. Larwa rozwija się w łuszczynkach rzeżuchy łąkowej — Cardamina pratensis L.; żywi się nasionami, a przepoczwarcza w glebie. Postacie dojrzałe spotykano poza wymienioną rośliną żywicielską na rzeżusze gorzkiej — C. amara L., żywcu dziewięciolistnym — Dentaria enneaphyllos L., miesięcznicy trwałej — Lunaria rediviva L. i rzodkiewniku pospolitym — Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh.
