Pospolity gatunek holarktyczny, szeroko rozprzestrzeniony prawie w całej Palearktyce, w Europie docierający na północ do Grenlandii, Islandii, skrajnych prowincji Norwegii i Finlandii, poza tym notowany z Indii i Hawajów, dokąd był prawdopodobnie zawleczony. W Polsce szeroko rozmieszczony od północy kraju aż do Tatr, lecz z wielu jeszcze krain nie wykazany. Występuje głównie na padlinie, zwłaszcza większych zwierząt, poza tym poławiany pod ekskrementami, nawozem, w gnijących grzybach, a na pobrzeżach morskich pod rozkładającymi się morszczynami; odżywia się larwami i poczwarkami muchówek.
