Gatunek zamieszkujący zachodnią i środkową część Europy z wyjątkiem obszaru alpejskiego. W Polsce, aczkolwiek nie jest znany z wielu krain, występuje prawdopodobnie w całym kraju prócz wyższych partii górskich. Szczegółowe dane o bionomii tego gatunku są bardzo skąpe. S. Smreczyński (1972) podaje ogólnikowo, że żyje na brzozach — Betula L. Według L. Dieckmanna (1988) występuje w chłodnych i ciepłych obszarach na Betula pendula Roth, brzozie nie rosnącej w Polsce w naturalnych środowiskach. Postacie dojrzałe pojawiają się na drzewach od lipca do połowy września. Samice składają jaja do męskich pączków kwiatowych. Larwy odbywają rozwój od września, przezimowują w pączkach kwiatowych, następnie opuszczają je w połowie maja i przemieszczają się do gleby, gdzie przepoczwarczają się na początku czerwca. Młode imagines ukazują się w lipcu.
