Gatunek rozprzestrzeniony w południowej, zachodniej i środkowej Europie, na północ docierający do Wysp Brytyjskich, Danii i południowej Szwecji. Ten duży kusak, pięknie ubarwiony, wszędzie, również w Polsce rzadko i lokalnie spotykany, częściej i liczniej w latach o przeciętnie wyższej temperaturze. Znajdowany zarówno na terenach otwartych jak i lesistych, wśród rozkładających się szczątków roślinnych, pod ekskrementami, padliną, przy wyciekającym soku z drzew, zwłaszcza z brzóz. Prowadzi drapieżny sposób życia, odżywiając się larwami owadów występującymi w wymienionych materiałach.
