Gatunek górski i podgórski, rozprzestrzeniony w całym łuku Karpat od Polski do Rumunii, w północnej Jugosławii, Styrii i Karyntii W Polsce chrząszcz nadzwyczaj rzadki, znany z niewielu stanowisk leżących w czterech krainach. Znajdowany najczęściej w gniazdach mrówek Myrmica laevinodis Nyl. oraz mrowiskach różnych gatunków z rodzaju Lasius F., w zmurszałym drewnie starych pni i pod obluźnioną korą,
