Gatunek rozprzestrzeniony w północnej i środkowej Europie, na północ docierający do Islandii, Wysp Brytyjskich i skrajnych prowincji północnych Fennoskandii i półwyspu Kola, a na południe do pónocnych Włoch i Siedmiogrodu. W Polsce sporadycznie spotykany i dość rzadko, zarówno na niżu jak i w górach. Zamieszkuje torfowiska, tereny bagienne, podmokłe olszyny i pobrzeża bajorek leśnych. Znajdowany wśród mchów, zwłaszcza z rodzaju Sphagnum Ehrh., pod opadłym listowiem, gnijącymi grzybami i rozkładającymi się szczątkami roślinnymi.
