Szeroko rozprzestrzeniony, pospolity gatunek europejsko-syberyjski, wykazywany również z Zakaukazia, Kazachstanu, Egiptu i Maroka. Występuje zarówno w wodach bieżących jak i stojących, liczniejszy w jeziorach oligotroficznych.
