Gatunek rozprzestrzeniony w środkowej i północnej Europie, w Fennoskandii przekraczający daleko poza koło podbiegunowe. W Polsce poławiany głównie na południu w górzystych i pagórkowatych terenach, występuje w potokach z czystą wodą, znajdowany przeważnie wśród mchu i pod małymi kamieniami, niekiedy w znacznej liczbie osobników.
