Gatunek zamieszkujący głównie środkową i południową część Europy, na północ docierający do Wysp Brytyjskich, Danii i południowych prowincji Fennoskandii, wykazywany także z Syberii i Kaukazu. Zakorek wąski był notowany z nielicznych tylko stanowisk rozproszonych w różnych częściach Polski. Głównym żywicielem jest sosna, rzadziej świerk. Opada drzewa leżące i pniaki, zwłaszcza w środowiskach wilgotnych. Chodnik macierzysty jednoramienny, podłużny, długości do 5 cm, słabo zaznaczony w bielu. Samica składa jaja w niszach, a nie w chodniku. Młode chrząszcze żerują w miejscu wylęgu lub pod korą dłużyc i gałęzi, niekiedy w szkółkach i uprawach, gdzie ogryzają korę na strzałach i korzeniach.
