Spotykany często w świetlistych lasach mieszanych, parkach, ogrodach motyl pojawia się od końca IV do VII. Dorosłe okazy świeżo wyklutych motyli łatwo zauważyć gdyż siedzą nisko nad ziemią na pniach lip, brzóz i niektórych innych drzew liściastych. Gąsienice żerują od V do IX na lipach, brzozach, olchach, wiązach, a wg innych źródeł także na dębach i czereśniach. Znane są trzy rodzaje ubarwienia gąsienic: niebieskozielona w jaśniejsze skośne paski, żółtozielona w jaśniejsze paski oraz żółtozielona w podwójne paski — białożółte i pomarańczowe. Cechą rozpoznawczą jest żółtopomarańczowa gwiazdka, znajdująca się na klapie odbytowej pod niebieskim rogiem. Przed przepoczwarczeniem się gąsienica traci barwy zielonożółte i staje się brudnoróżowofioletowa. Ciemno brunatna, matowa poczwarka zimuje w ziemi.
