Gatunek rozsiedlony głównie w północnej i środkowej części Europy, na południe docierający do Włoch północnych i Rumunii, wykazywany też z Kaukazu. W Polsce chrząszcz rzadko i sporadycznie spotykany, przy czym większość danych o jego rozmieszczeniu opiera się na znaleziskach w ubiegłym stuleciu. Larwy żyją w zmurszałym i przegrzybiałym drewnie przeważnie drzew stojących, rzadziej w martwych gałęziach, pieńkach, złomach i suchych hubach nadrzewnych oraz w chodnikach innych chrząszczy, gdzie występuje przegrzybiałe drewno. Postacie dojrzałe ukazują się zwykle w drugiej połowie maja i są spotykane do lipca.
