Taxon description
Gatunek rozmieszczony w strefie lasów iglastych północnej Palearktyki, w Europie na południe sięgający do Pirenejów, północnych części Włoch i Bałkanów, poza tym notowany z Azji Mniejszej. W Polsce występuje najczęściej w północnej części kraju oraz w okolicach górskich. Znajdowany pod obluźnioną korą pieńków oraz pni świerków, rzadziej sosen i jodeł, zarówno drzew stojących, jak i obalonych na ziemię. Rzadziej znajdowany pod korą drzew liściastych. Żyje w chodnikach owadów podkorowych. Uznawany za pożytecznego chrząszcza dla leśnictwa z uwagi na drapieżność w stosunku do korników. Spotykany najczęściej w żerowiskach Ips typographus (L.), Ips duplicatus Sahlb. i Blastophagus piniperda (L.).
