Gatunek rozmieszczony w Europie od Hiszpanii i północnych Włoch po Wyspy Brytyjskie, północne obszary Skandynawii, Finlandię i Karelię, notowany też z Syberii. Smolik sosnowiec występuje w Polsce na całym obszarze. Jako drzewa żywicielskie podawane są: sosna zwyczajna — Pinus silvestris L., sosna wejmutka — P. strobus L., kosodrzewina — P. mughus Scop., limba — P. cembra L. i świerk pospolity — Picea excelsa (Lam.) Lk. Materiałem lęgowym tego ryjkowca są gałęzie, zwłaszcza w strefie koron drzew obumierających lub martwych. Samice od wiosny do jesieni składają jaja pod korą w złożach, jednorazowo do 20 sztuk. Rozwój embrionalny trwa około trzech tygodni. Larwa żeruje w ciągu trzech-pięciu miesięcy. W ciągu roku występuje jedno pokolenie, niekiedy dwie generacje.
