Taxon description
Gatunek szeroko rozmieszczony w Europie, od środkowej części kontynentu i Półwyspu Bałkańskiego po Wyspy Brytyjskie, północną Skandynawię, Finlandię i Karelię. Smolik szyszkowiec występuje w Polsce prawdopodobnie na obszarze całego kraju z wyjątkiem wyższych partii górskich, nie jest jednak jeszcze znany z wielu krain. Jest na ogół rzadko i sporadycznie spotykany, tylko z Wielkopolski częściej notowany. Zeszłowieczne dane o jego występowaniu w Sudetach i Beskidzie Zachodnim winny być potwierdzone nowymi znaleziskami. Żyje na sośnie zwyczajnej — Pinus silvestris L., sośnie czarnej — P. nigra Arnold i limbie — P. cembra L. Postacie dojrzałe spotyka się od maja na gałęziach drzew. Samice składają jaja pojedynczo, głęboko w niedojrzałe, zielone szyszki. Larwy żerują w trzonie szyszki i wyżerają nasiona i ich łuski. Wskutek żerowania larwy zaatakowane szyszki ulegają zniekształceniu. Przepoczwarczenie następuje w miejscu żerowania. W ciągu roku występuje jedno pokolenie.
