Gatunek rozprzestrzeniony w Europie od krajów śródziemnomorskich do Wysp Brytyjskich, Danii i południowych prowincji Szwecji i Finlandii, notowany ponadto z Algierii, Kaukazu i Mongolii. W Polsce, prócz dwu krain, notowany z całego obszaru. Ryjkowiec występujący na terenach piaszczystych, w suchych lasach sosnowych oraz na murawach kserotermicznych. Jako rośliny żywicielskie podawane są macierzanka piaskowa — Thymus serpyllum L. em. Fr. i macierzanka zwyczajna — Thymus pulegioides L. Larwa żeruje w górnej części łodygi i powoduje owalne wyrosła 2-4 mm długości i około 2 mm szerokości.
