Taxon description
Gatunek rozprzestrzeniony prawie w całej Palearktyce, w Europie występujący głównie w jej części południowej i środkowej, na północ sięgający po Wyspy Brytyjskie, Danię i południową Szwecję. Występuje w Polsce od Bałtyku aż po Tatry, nie notowany jeszcze tylko z Kotliny Nowotarskiej. Chrząszcz pospolity na całym niżu i w niższych położeniach górskich. Zasiedla pola, łąki, rowy, przydroża i zarośla. Żyje na lucernie sierpowatej — Medicago falcata L., lucernie nerkowatej — M. lupulina L. oraz na często uprawianej i niekiedy zdziczałej lucernie siewnej — Medicago sativa L. Według L. Dieckmanna (1977) omawiany chrząszcz nie odbywa rozwoju w roślinach z rodzajów nostrzyk — Melilotus Hill. em. Ad. i koniczyna — Trifolium L., jak podają niektórzy autorzy. Larwy drążą chodniki o długości do 12-15 cm w rdzeniu łodygi, a postacie dojrzałe żerują na liściach i kwiatach. Przy masowym pojawie mogą powodować znaczne szkody w uprawach lucerny.
