Gatunek rozpowszechniony w całej Europie, przy czym w obrębie areału gatunkowego w kierunkach z zachodu na wschód i z południa na północ jest coraz częściej spotykany. Notowany poza tym z Kaukazu. W Polsce pospolity, występujący prawdopodobnie na całym obszarze prócz wyższych partii górskich. Nieliczne dane o jego występowaniu są konsekwencją małej ilości badań faunistycznych, zwłaszcza na terenach górzystych. Rozwój larwalny odbywa w biało przegrzybiałym drewnie pni, pniaków i gałęzi różnych drzew liściastych, głównie topól i wierzb. Pojaw postaci dojrzałych zaczyna się od końca maja i trwa do lipca, w górach do sierpnia. Chrząszcze są bardzo ruchliwe i lotne, przebywają one na nasłonecznionych miejscach, na drzewach i kwitnącej roślinności, głównie na baldaszkowatych.
