Taxon description
Obszar zasiedlenia tego gatunku obejmuje południową, zachodnią i środkową część Europy. Dociera na północ do Danii, południowych części Fennoskandii i Karelii, a na wschód do Syberii Zachodniej, Bliskiego Wschodu i Turkmenii; został zawleczony do Stanów Zjednoczonych Ameryki Północnej. W Polsce pospolity, rozprzestrzeniony od Bałtyku aż po Tatry. Występuje zarówno w suchych i ciepłych środowiskach, jak i w chłodnych, miernie wilgotnych. Larwy odbywają rozwój w maju-czerwcu w owocujących główkach kwiatowych koniczyny polnej — Trifolium arvense L., koniczyny łąkowej — T. pratense L. i koniczynie różnoogonkowej — T. campestre Schreb.; z roślin przechodzą następnie do gleby, gdzie odbywają przeobrażenie. Nowa generacja ukazuje się w lipcu, ale nie opuszcza komór poczwarkowych, zimując w nich. Dopiero w maju następnego roku chrząszcze ukazują się na koniczynach, na których żerują dla uzyskania dojrzałości płciowej.
