Gatunek rozprzestrzeniony w większej części Palearktyki, zawleczony ponadto do Ameryki Północnej. W Polsce znany głównie z terenów nizinnych, wyżej 500 m n.p.m. poławiany rzadko i sporadycznie. Znajdowany od kwietnia do września w odchodach krów, koni i owiec, w pryzmach kompostowych i wśród rozkładających się szczątków roślinnych.
