Gatunek występujący od południowej Anglii i Szwecji przez całą środkową część Europy aż do Francji, północnych Włoch i Bośni, notowany poza tym z Bułgarii. W Polsce chrząszcz nadzwyczaj rzadko spotykany, znany tylko z dwu krain na podstawie znalezisk sprzed około 70 lat. Wymagania środowiskowe słabo poznane; poławiany pod ekskrementami, a w strefie alpejskiej na murawach pod kamieniami.
