Gatunek występujący w Europie południowej (nie znany z Półwyspu Iberyjskiego) oraz w południowych obszarach Europy Środkowej i Wschodniej; wykazywany również z Azji Mniejszej i Kaukazu. Wszędzie rzadko i sporadycznie spotykany. W Polsce z całą pewnością nie stwierdzony. Jedyna wzmianka sprzed przeszło stu lat o jego występowaniu w Beskidach Zachodnich oparta była zapewne na podstawie błędnego oznaczenia, gdyż nie została później potwierdzona przez M. Łomnickiego (1913) w wykazie chrząszczy Polski. Zamieszkuje lasy liściaste i mieszane na terenach nizinnych i podgórskich oraz w szerokich dolinach górskich. Bionomia słabo poznana. Larwy bytują jakoby w glebie (Dolin 1964), co wydaje się mało prawdopodobne, gdyż dotychczas wszystkie inne znane larwy gatunków z rodzaju Ampedus Dej. są związane biologicznie z butwiejącym drewnem, będącym w różnych fazach rozkładu. Postacie dojrzałe łowi się przeważnie pojedynczo zarówno na starych, jak i krzaczastych dębach, na trawach pod drzewami i na kwitnących krzewach.
