Taxon description
Gatunek palearktyczny, rozprzestrzeniony od Półwyspu Iberyjskiego po Azję Wschodnią, w Europie na północ docierający do około 66° szerokości geograficznej. W Polsce, chociaż nie jest jeszcze znany z niektórych krain, występuje prawdopodobnie w całym kraju. Zasiedla głównie wilgotne i zimne środowiska. Naturalnymi roślinami żywicielskimi są czeremcha zwyczajna — Padus avium Mill., śliwa tarnina — Prunus spinosa L. i wiśnia wonna — Cerasus mahaleb (L.) Miller, z których ryjkowiec ten przechodzi na następujące drzewa owocowe: śliwę domową — Prunus domestica L., wiśnię pospolitą — Cerasus vulgaris Mill. i czereśnię — C. avium (L.) Moench. Imagines opuszczają kwatery zimowe w połowie kwietnia i przemieszczają się na drzewa, gdzie żerują dla uzyskania dojrzałości. Samice w końcu maja i na początku czerwca składają jaja w młode, zielone owoce. Jaja są składane pojedynczo przez nakłuty kanał, pod łupinę pestki. Larwy odbywają rozwój w pestkach w ciągu 4-5 tygodni; przed przepoczwarczeniem wygryzają w ścianie pestki otwór, przez który młode imagines wydobywają się, w końcu lipca, na zewnątrz. Chrząszcze żerują kilka dni na liściach, następnie przewędrowują na diapauzę zimową do gleby. Kwieciak pestkowiec może niekiedy powodować wielkie szkody w uprawach wiśni i czereśni.
