Gatunek rozprzestrzeniony w środkowej i północnej części Europy (w Fennoskandii dociera do koła podbiegunowego), wykazywany także z Syberii. W Polsce chrząszcz nadzwyczaj rzadko spotykany, niedawno stwierdzony w okolicy Warszawy i Łodzi. Dawne dane o występowaniu na Śląsku Dolnym i w Sudetach Wschodnich, oparte na znaleziskach sprzed przeszło stu lat, wymagają potwierdzenia nowymi materiałami. Znajdowany w ekskrementach końskich.
