Taxon description
Podgatunek nominatywny rozmieszczony głównie w północnej i środkowej Europie, ponadto znany z górzystych obszarów w Europie południowej. W Polsce występuje prawdopodobnie w całym kraju, nie notowany jednak z wielu krain, zwłaszcza nizinnych. Omyłkowo wykazany z Pyr koło Warszawy (Szymczakowski 1959b) na podstawie błędnie oznaczonego okazu Catops coracinus Kellner (W. Szymczakowski*). Na ogół dość pospolity, najliczniej występuje w Tatrach, gdzie sięga do piętra alpejskiego. Spotykany przeważnie na padlinie, rzadziej w gniazdach ssaków, dziuplach i jaskiniach.
