Gatunek zamieszkujący, z wyjątkiem północnej części Fennoskandii, całą Europę, wykazywany także z Algierii. W Polsce dość rzadko i sporadycznie spotykany. Dawne wzmianki o występowaniu omawianego gatunku na Śląsku i w Sudetach wymagają potwierdzenia nowymi doniesieniami, gdyż mylono go z innymi gatunkami. Omyłkowo wykazany z okolic Krakowa (Rybiński 1897) na podstawie błędnego oznaczenia Choleva (Choleva) sturmii Brisout, jak to wykazał W. Szymczakowski (1959b). Zamieszkuje tereny otwarte i suche, gdzie znajdowany w chodnikach gryzoni i kretów, niekiedy również w przedsionkach jaskiń.
