Taxon description
Gatunek rozsiedlony głównie w południowej części Europy, występujący niekiedy lokalnie na najcieplejszych terenach w południowej części Europy Środkowej, wykazany również z Afryki Północnej. W Polsce notowany tylko z czterech krain, z większości stanowisk na podstawie znalezisk sprzed przeszło stu lat, dlatego też dawne wzmianki o występowaniu omawianego gatunku w naszym kraju powinny być potwierdzone nowymi materiałami. Według S. Mazura (1975) w Polsce nie występuje, ale twierdzenie to nie ma uzasadnienia, gdyż stosunkowo niedawno z Oławy na Śląsku Dolnym (poza innymi niekrajowymi stanowiskami) została opisana odmiana tego gatunku — a. dostali J. Winkler (1951). Z uwagi na wymagania ekologiczne dane o zasiedleniu Pojezierza Mazurskiego wydają się być niewiarygodne. Zasiedla stare lasy z przestojami starych dębów, w których odbywa rozwój larwalny. Spotykany często w towarzystwie kapturnika — Bostrichus capucinus (L.), szkodnika dębu, którego larwami i poczwarkami żywi się. Postacie dojrzałe ukazują się w maju i czerwcu, są one bardzo ruchliwe i trudne do schwytania. W niektórych okolicach omawiany chrząszcz wyginął w związku z wycięciem starych drzewostanów.
