Pospolity gatunek palearktyczny, występujący w całej Europie, na wschód przez Syberię docierający aż do Kamczatki. W Polsce rozmieszczony od Bałtyku po Tatry. Zasiedla zarówno tereny nizinne, jak i górzyste, gdzie dociera do strefy subalpejskiej. Występuje na różnego typu glebach, suchych i wilgotnych, pod nisko rosnącymi roślinami, kamieniami, opadłymi liśćmi, wśród mchów i gnijących szczątków roślinnych.
