Gatunek szklarniowy. Prawdopodobnie pochodzi z Ameryki Południowej; rozwleczony do wszystkich części świata wraz z roślinami hodowanymi, w strefach klimatu ciepłego może być szkodnikiem upraw (np. na Czarnomorskim Wybrzeżu Kaukazu). Polifag.
