Szeroko rozprzestrzeniony gatunek w Europie, północnej Afryce i zachodniej Azji, w Europie na północ sięga do Wysp Brytyjskich i środkowych prowincji w Fennoskandii. Występuje głównie na terenach nizinnych i pogórzach, zarówno w różnego typu wodach stojących jak i wolno płynących.
