Gatunek obejmujący zasięgiem kraje Europy południowej i środkowej, wykazywany również z Kaukazu i Azji Mniejszej. W Polsce znany z nielicznych stanowisk i niewielu krain. Występuje na dębach rosnących głównie na wilgotnych, zacienionych stanowiskach. Postacie dojrzałe ukazują się w maju. Prowadzą skryty sposób życia, kryjąc się za dnia w szczelinach drewna i chodnikach wyjściowych chrząszczy, a aktywność wykazują dopiero w godzinach popołudniowych. Są niekiedy spotykane na świeżo okorowanych albo zranionych drzewach. Larwy żerują w wilgotnym, jeszcze miękkim bielu, zwłaszcza powalonych dębów; notowano je również z okorowanych wierzb i z korzeni robinii.
