Szeroko rozsiedlony gatunek w zachodniej, południowej i środkowej Europie, poza tym notowany z pojedynczych stanowisk w Norwegii, Szwecji, Azji Mniejszej i na Kaukazie. W Polsce znany z nielicznych miejscowości, przy tym większość danych oparta na znaleziskach w ubiegłym wieku. Znajdowany pod gnijącymi szczątkami roślinnymi na polach, w lasach, w przedsionkach jaskiń, podziemnych gniazdach królików, lisów, kretów i myszy, a nawet mrówek.
