Taxon description
Gatunek rozsiedlony w Europie od Wysp Brytyjskich, Danii i południowych prowincji Szwecji aż do krajów śródziemnomorskich, na wschód docierający do Uralu Południowego, notowany poza tym z Afryki Północnej, Azji Mniejszej i Kaukazu. W Polsce, choć nie jest znany jeszcze z niektórych krain, występuje prawdopodobnie na całym obszarze prócz wyższych partii górskich. Gatunek oligofagiczny, odbywający rozwój larwalny w krzewach i drzewach liściastych, również owocowych. Najczęściej występuje w butwiejącym drewnie dębów — Quercus L. i leszczyny — Corylus L., rzadziej jest notowany z kilkunastu innych gatunków. Opada wilgotne, pokryte jeszcze korą, biało przegrzybiałe drewno pni i gałęzi w koronie martwych stojących drzew, jak i powalonych, również obłamanych lub ściętych gałęzi leżących na ziemi. Cykl rozwojowy co najmniej dwuletni. Larwy początkowo krótko żerują pod korą, później drążą w bielu i drewnie nieregularne podłużne chodniki. Po pierwszym przezimowaniu larwa przechodzi w lipcu-sierpniu w przypowierzchniową warstwę bielu, gdzie sporządza komorę poczwarkową. Wylęgnięte imagines przezimowują w komorach, ukazują się na zewnątrz w kwietniu-maju i spotykane są do lipca, głównie na drzewach żywicielskich.
