Taxon description
Burakowski et al. 1980:
Gatunek rozsiedlony głównie w środkowej i wschodniej Europie, ponadto podawany z Kaukazu, Azji Mniejszej, Iranu i środkowej Syberii. W Polsce chrząszcz rzadko spotykany, znany z pojedynczych stanowisk. Według G. Czwaliny (1885, 1888) omyłkowo wykazany z Zalewu Wiślanego i byłych Prus (Dommer 1850, Lentz 1857, 1879) na podstawie błędnie oznaczonych okazów innego gatunku Ph. quisquiliarius (Gyll.). Jednak omawiany, gatunek był później stwierdzony na Mazurach, wobec tego występowanie jego na Pobrzeżu Bałtyku jest możliwe. Znajdowany na polach i w ogrodach pod rozkładającymi się szczątkami roślinnymi, zwłaszcza pod gnijącą słomą, chwastami, nacią ziemniaczaną i nawozem.
