Gatunek rozmieszczony w środkowej i północnej części Europy oraz na Syberii, docierający do Kraju Nadmorskiego i Japonii. W Polsce zasiedla drzewostany świerkowe zarówno na obszarach nizinnych jak i górzystych, ale z niektórych krain dotychczas nie wykazany. Głównym żywicielem jest świerk w obu jego zasięgach, rzadziej spotykano na jodle. Opada usychające, dolne gałęzie oraz uschnięte świerczki w podszycie. Chodnik macierzysty klamrowaty, poprzeczny w kształcie litery V, zwykle o jednym krótszym ramieniu. Chodniki larwalne długie, regularne, odbijają się głęboko w bielu. Cykl rozwojowy prawdopodobnie dwuletni, gdyż w okresie zimowym spotyka się jednocześnie larwy i postacie dojrzałe.
