Taxon description
Gatunek europejski, rozprzestrzeniony od Wysp Brytyjskich i południowych części Fennoskandii aż do krajów śródziemnomorskich, wykazywany również z Podola. W Polsce występuje od wybrzeży Bałtyku aż po Tatry. Zamieszkuje tereny nizinne i niższe położenia górskie. Główną rośliną żywicielską jest buk, ale zasiedla również inne drzewa liściaste. Rozwój odbywa w martwym, suchym drewnie pokrytym korą, w pniach, uschniętych lub złamanych gałęziach w koronach drzew, w tylcach oraz w pniakach. Larwy żerują początkowo pod korą w bielu, a następnie wdrążają się głęboko w drewno. Cykl rozwojowy w sprzyjających warunkach trwa jeden rok, ale może być przedłużony nawet do trzech lat. Larwa przed przepoczwarczeniem na jesieni wytwarza białawy, owalny kokon, w którym wylęgnięty chrząszcz przezimowuje. Postacie dojrzałe ukazują się na powierzchni w maju i do czerwca można je spotkać na materiale lęgowym i w pobliżu na kwiatach krzewów i drzew.
