Gatunek myrmekofilny, rozmieszczony w środkowej i północnej Europie (prócz północnej części Fennoskandii), na zachód docierający do Francji, a na południe do północnych Włoch i Siedmiogrodu. W Polsce, prócz wyższych partii górskich, występuje prawdopodobnie na całym obszarze, nie znany jednak jeszcze z wielu krain. Zamieszkuje obszary nizinne i górzyste, docierając do strefy subalpejskiej. Żyje w gniazdach mrówek, zwłaszcza Formica rufa L., F. pratensis Retzius i Lasius fuliginosus (Latr.).
