Taxon description

Burakowski et al. 1980:

Pospolity gatunek, prawdopodobnie kosmopolityczny, szeroko rozprzestrzeniony w Palearktyce, w Europie rozsiedlony od krajów śródziemnomorskich aż do Grenlandii, Islandii i północnych krańców Fennoskandii, ponadto notowany z Ameryki Północnej i Południowej, Australii i Nowej Zelandii. Aczkolwiek nie znany jeszcze z wielu krain, występuje w Polsce prawdopodobnie na całym obszarze. Zamieszkuje zarówno obszary nizinne jak i górskie, docierając do strefy alpejskiej. Prowadzi podziemny sposób życia, występując pod rozkładającymi się szczątkami roślinnymi w piwnicach, szopach, stodołach, również w kopalniach, grotach i przedsionkach jaskiń, gdzie jest najczęściej spotykanym chrząszczem jaskiniowym, nadto spotykany w gniazdach kretów i świstaków, w dziuplach drzew i w gnijących grzybach.
