Gatunek rozmieszczony w południowej, zachodniej i środkowej Europie, notowany poza tym z Anglii i jednej południowej prowincji Szwecji. W Polsce znany z nielicznych, rozproszonych stanowisk. Żyje w podziemnych gniazdach drobnych ssaków, zwłaszcza kretów, rzadziej myszy, szczurów, chomików i susłów. Postacie dorosłe poławiane również w próchnie drzew, pod zmurszałą, odstającą korą i przy wyciekającym soku z pni drzew.
