Podgatunek holocykliczny i jednodomny. Polifag na trawach, u nas znaleziony na pszenicy — Triticum vulgare Vill., owsie — Avena sativa L., jęczmieniu — Hordeum vulgare L., a z traw dzikich na Calamagrostis epigeios (L.) Roth, Holcus lanatus L., Phleum alpinum L., Agrostis vulgaris With., Dactylis glomerata L., Deschampsia flexuosa (L.) Trin. oraz na turzycy — Carex L. sp. Podgatunek nominatywny atakuje kukurydzę i rozmieszczony jest głównie w zlewisku Morza Śródziemnego. Notowany jako szkodnik zbóż i wektor chorób wirusowych.
